Girl Culture

Wauwatosa, WI

2017-2018

This series was made when I was eighteen years old in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. I photographed girls I grew up with, dressing them in pieces from my mother’s vintage designer archive and garments I designed myself and placed them into the quiet suburban landscapes we came from.

The work sits somewhere between documentation and performance. A small attempt at transformation. Adolescence refracted through borrowed glamour, Midwestern stillness, and the desire to become someone larger than the environment you were handed.

At the time, I was interested in the tension between beauty and displacement—how clothing, posture, and image-making could momentarily interrupt the ordinary.
